Set Your Southern Fix at Sassafras Saloon in Hollywood
LOS ANGELES + BARS
~ BY MONICA HUNT
New Orleans is quite a way off from Los Angeles, but that isn’t stopping The 1933 group from bringing the soul of that marvelous city to your neighborhood in the form of a saloon. In a darkened corner of Hollywood, not often frequented by the masses, Sassafras Saloon is serving cocktails made with house-aged barrel bourbon, small plates of southern-inspired food, and the sounds of Zydeco, jazz, and blues.
The interior of Sassafras was crafted with expert care — much of the decor was salvaged from an ancient townhouse in New Orleans and junkyards. The staff is decked out in clothing that speaks to a bygone southern era and has also been instructed to exhibit that world renowned southern hospitality to all of Sassafras’ guests. That’s right, no bullshit Hollywood attitude here. In addition to some well-heeled drinks like a “Grilled Peach Punch,” a “Blackstrap Old Fashioned,” made with Buffalo Trace whiskey (it’s really delicious), or just a plain old mint julep. The only thing you’re missing is a porch, city perch, or strand of beads. Maybe not, Sassafras is classier than that.
While sitting inside this southern gothic mega bar, try some of the small plates Sassafras has to offer — all southern inspired. Would you expect anything else? Get your Jumbalaya, collard green, sweet potato pie, or Co-Cola glazed rib fix here. Oh yeah, have you ever tried Shrimp and grits? If not, then get ready for a mouthgasm, as Sassafras will have a warm bowl of them waiting for you.
With the amount of energy the 1933 Group has put into the decor, live music, cocktail crafting, and food, you’re almost guaranteed to have a fabulous time make believin’ you’re in a New Orleans joint. In fact, you may never have to go to Louisiana ever again. Sassafras is a near-close experience.
