LOS ANGELES LIFESTYLE | DINING
~By Adrien Finkel
We all know summer is the time to steer clear of those pesky carbohydrates. Time to keep that beach bod slim. But let me tell you friends, that for some of us, this is NOT an easy task. Just the other day I found myself at the beach fantasizing about ripping a Choco-Taco out of an innocent twelve year old’s hands. It was at that very moment that I decided enough is enough. Desserts may be bad for the waistline, but have we forgotten about human happiness?
I am taking the first rebellious summer step towards satisfaction, by bring you my TWENTY FAVORITE DESSERTS IN LOS ANGELES. A list that steers clear of the frozen yogurt and cupcake madness and brings you the real deal. Los Angeles is filled to the brim with delicious delectables and life is too short to wait for winter.
TWENTY FAVORITE DESSERTS IN LOS ANGELES
Warning: possible drooling from the mouth may occur when reading.
HERE. WE. GO.
Gjelina: After you experience the magnificent Italian cuisine that Gjelina has to offer, make sure to order the Butterscotch pot de creme with salted caramel and creme fraiche. Then walk off the calories by roaming up and down Abbot Kinney.
Pazzo Gelato: Madagascar Chocolate and Stracciatella Gelato (in a waffle cone if you know what’s good for you). Who knew that in the heart of Silverlake you would find this rich chocolate and vanilla goodness that melts in your mouth and makes you smile for days?
Sweet Lady Jane
: Triple Berry Shortcake
- Yellow butter cake with three layers of lightly sweetened whipped cream and layers of strawberries, raspberries, and fresh blue or blackberries (seasonal). Frosted with whipped cream and buttercream vines and fresh berries.
Pace: Flourless Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (make sure to mention it when ordering your meal for they bake it fresh to order)
Magnolia Bakery: Magnolia’s Famous Banana Pudding - Packed with homemade nilla wafers and fresh bananas. Can’t finish it? Its perfectly packed in a to-go container so you can save it for a midnight snack!
SusieCakes: Vanilla Celebration Cake - If you like good old fashioned birthday cake, this is the best in town.
MILK Bake Shop: Super Chunk Peanut Butter Cookies - This and a glass of milk and you will be in foodie heaven.
Animal: Trese Leches, Berries, and Opal Basil - You may have had Trese Leches cake before, but I am telling you the consistency of this moist cakey goodness is perfection in every way.
Kat’s Delicatessen: Because sometimes you need a good old New York Black and White Cookie.
Beer Belly: Deep fried twinkie with strawberry puree and chocolate chip ice cream. Need I say more?
Susina Bakery: Pear Tart Tatin - Aside that this bakery is by far one of my favorite places in LA, their Pear Tart Tatin literally transports you to Paris. A slice of this and a cup of coffee and your day will be infinitely breezier.
Luques: Churros y chocolate with dulce de leche and horchata ice cream - I know Luques is known for its fabulous dinner menu, but definitely save room for this simple, yet unforgettable, dessert.
Diddy Riese: Create you own homemade Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich with their fresh cookie and ice cream selection. I always choose two chocolate chip cookies with mint chip ice cream, but go crazier, the options are endless!
Bottega Louie: French Macaroons - Whether you hit up this awesome downtown establishment for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there is always time for one of their homemade French Macaroons. I always stock up on the Pistachio and the Vanilla.
Portos Bakery: New York Cheesecake - At this classic LA bakery you will find a perfectly baked classic New York Cheesecake, which is not very easy to come by in these parts! So hop in line for a piece with the rest of LA’s locals. It’s worth the wait!
I Heart Pies
: Cracker Jack Pie
- Rich salted caramel mousse, separated by a layer of peanuts, and topped with chocolate mousse. In a cookie crust! This fabulous rising company is available at your local farmers markets or they will deliver right to your door! It doesn’t get much better than this.
Short Order: Peanut Butter Pretzel Shake - Short order may be a burger joint, but I say skip the burger and head straight to this shake. Its the perfect combination of salt and sweet and will keep you full for hours. Hey, it’s filled with peanut butter, so there’s your protein!
Urth Caffe: Granny Smith Apple Pie - You know when you are standing in line to order a salad at Urth and you are staring at this amazing apple pie in the display case? Well just DO IT. Ditch the salad, take the pie. Our days on this earth are numbered and this amazing pie needs to be involved.
Bouchon: Profiteroles with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce. When it comes to dessert lists, I believe that anything which involves vanilla ice cream in a puff pastry should be involved. Bouchon has an extensive list of delicious treats, but make sure this is at the top of yours!
: Caramelized Banana Custard Cake
with Chocolate Ice Cream. Hands down on my top five list. Banana bread? Topped with bruleed custard? Chocolate ice cream? Who could ask for anything more?!
So there you have it! Twenty incredible reasons to NOT juice this week. Remember people, diet has the word DIE in it. A healthy lifestyle is where it’s at. And there is ALWAYS room for dessert.
