Artist of the Month: Black Boots
NIGHTLIFE | MUSIC
~ BY DANIEL FARR
What started as a simple idea, has rapidly evolved into a large scale effort to give the emerging electronic dance music scene something different – timeless songs with substance, purpose, and emotion.”
Perhaps it’s just us, but nightlife’s electronic dance music scene is starting to feel…how should we put this gently? …TIRED.
It happens with most music genre’s. They start underground, celebrated by a few die-hards at secret parties or raves, but eventually, someone pioneers a few tunes that knock pop culture square in the face and the genre takes off. It happened a few years ago when clubs nationwide switched over from hiphop and the occasional top 40′s pop mix and plunged headfirst into EDM. It’s been a few years now, a few EDM music festivals later, and countless nightclub parties that play the same top songs over and over again.
Don’t get us wrong. We love electronic dance music. We love many of the big DJ’s from Tiesto and Calvin Harris to Deadmau5 and Skrillex. The genre’s just gone so very pop culture that it’s rare to find any new artists who are doing something original and non-formulaic. We overheard a club owner the other day saying he could hire any decent local DJ, put up a sheet over the DJ booth and tell people it’s Kaskade and they’d be begging him to take their 100 dollar entry fee. And we love Kaskade! We just miss the performance of old-school rock ‘n roll. And then we heard about this brand spanking new artist duo, Black Boots.
Black Boots is comprised of two guys, Lightknife (real name Pedi Amiri) who spearheads the DJ production and Mikey Francis who also produces/DJ’s and acts as the vocal front. Merging DJ production and live vocal performance is a risky endevour, but these two seem to have pulled it off with songs like “Rebels in the Knight” and “Flash of Light.” Francis was originally a singer for the group Afghan Raiders. His voice feels raw, real, and vulnerable and the two’s music has a bit of a Killers vibe to it, but better produced for the nightlife and EDM scene.
“We’re building a bridge here,” declares Lightknife. “Black Boots has got an electronic body, but a rock ‘n’ roll soul. At the same time, the songwriting is genuine and organic…It’s written with feeling.”
The duo launched just this past year in Las Vegas and quickly got signed to premiere EDM label Ultra Records in the Fall of 2012. We’re expecting to see these two take off in 2013 and can’t wait to see where they go.
You can see Black Boots live on Friday, January 18th 2013 at Avalon in Hollywood, CA
