Smoke & Mirrors: Hollywood’s Latest Nightclub
The newest hollywood nightclub to arrive in Los Angeles is one of the more under-the-radar one’s to open yet. In fact, it officially opened at the end of last year, that’s how under-the-radar it’s been. Of course, that’s not surprising given that NYC nightlife guys Paul Sevigny (brother of actress Chloe Sevigny), and partner Armin Amiri are behind it. These are the guys who did the Hollywood spot Paul & Andre’s for a six-month stint in 2011, and have teamed up once again to bring something unique to Los Angeles nightlife.
Introducing Smoke & Mirrors, the reinvention of The Standard Hotel’s Purple Lounge in West Hollywood. Apparently there’s been very little renovation of the old space. Mentioned in a Hollywood Reporter article “there are no bottle-service tables, themed nights, or marquee promoters.”
The piece goes on “this place is practically designed with Scotch tape,” says Amiri with a laugh. Adds Sevigny, alluding to the sorts of places opened by the likes a certain club conglomerate: “Why spend $2 million on decor and then have to sell your club out to pay for it? It’s the people inside who matter, not the f–ing decorations.“
We’re not sure we completely agree. Paul and Armin are essentially selling ‘cool.’ But, if that is the vibe you seek, you now know where to go.
