Let’s just say I wasn’t the coolest kid in high school. While most my friends were making out and getting high, I was happily tucked in bed. As football games commenced, I read Catcher in the Rye. During cheerleading tryouts, I was contemplating the day’s Algebra extra credit. But, when it came to fashion, I did not screw around. While us girls were cutting our jean shorts to our ass cheeks, I longed for pleated skirts and saddle shoes. I dreamt of days where I could sport a red ribbon in my hair and rock dad’s argyle socks. But I never succumbed to my urges. Nerd attire was off limits.
Thanks to the passing of time I eventually found joy in watching sports, learned the importance of a good make out sesh, and chiefly, “GEEK CHIC” came into fashion. Hotties today like Zoe Deschanel, Lea Michele, and Joseph Gordon Levitt have shown us that being a nerd can not only be hip, but extremely sexy. All over Los Angeles people are adorned in ribbons, sweater vests, suspenders, and loafers. And I can guarantee you that if you wear a pair of tortoise shell squared eye glasses to any coffee joint in town you will be walking out of there with a latte in one hand and a phone number or two in the other.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. You didn’t read Catcher in the Rye and you failed Algebra…twice. But do not fret, my friend, because the best part about “Geek Chic” is that you can be a dummy and still look deliciously smart! That’s where I come in! 8. Accessorize: The key to any great outfit is its finishing touches. When it comes to looking nerd-tastic, accessories are key. Ladies, be sure to grab a cute pair of printed tights at Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie. While you are there, definitely stock up on your hair gear. Headbands adorned with bows, lace, and even a dash of plaid are always a great way to top things off. Men, check out J. Crew for a bevy of ties & bow ties that will bring your sexy school boy look to the next level. And last but not least, both sexes should immediately get their hands on a pair of glasses with a think black or brown rim. 7. Layering: No Geek Chic outfit is complete without some sort of layered article of clothing. Weather it is a vest, a sweater, or jacket… you are good to go. A great option for your first layer is a white button up dress shirt that has a great collar to show off. Next step is to add a great item on top. Cotton sweater vests and cardigans are always an adorable way to go for everyone! My suggestion is to keep those items in a simple array of colors so you can always add them to one of your many printed tops. 6. Skirts, Skirts, Skirts!: No Geek Chic lady is complete with out an array of high waisted a-line, pencil, and pleated skirts. If you want to sex up your look, keep the skirt short. If you are looking to keep things conservative, long skirts are totally acceptable, but not knee-lenth ladies! We are walking a thin line between nerdy and nasty, so the follow these rules are you are golden. Be sure to play with patterns, too. Plaid, floral, beaded, you name it. Mismatched patterns work wonders if you stay in a similar color scheme. Add a pair of simple tights, a skinny belt, and a pair of flats and you will be a dashing dweeb in no time.

5. Skinny Jeans & Patterned Pants: - When it comes to pants, a typical geek probably won’t be wearing the right fit. But because we are raising the bar for geeks everywhere, lets keep things classy by wearing very fitted jeans or pants. For the ladies, Madewell makes a great pair of fitted jeans & corduroys along with an array of patterned ankle length pants. For the men out there, I say leave the patterns at the door. Levis jeans are always a great move and J Crew is always a great place to snatch up some khakis.

4. Printed Tops: There is nothing like a printed button-up blouse or dress shirt to tuck into your skirt or pants. The various amounts prints are fabulously endless. From mini cat faces to ribbons and bows to pinstripes, button up tops and blouses are key to your geek chic wardrobe. A fantastic and hip way to nerd things up even more is to button those buttons all the way to the tippy top. Feel weird up there ladies? Add a bold, short necklace to soften the geek with a little chic.

3. Sweaters: - When it comes to sweaters, it is hard to go wrong. Cotton, cashmere, wool or knitted, you will be looking straight laced in no time! Feel free to find a pattern of your choice. Argyle, stripes, polka-dots, you name it. Even if your sweater has a little puppy on the front, go for it! Cuteness is key. REMINDER: When I say sweater, I don’t mean baggy old sweaters from your mom and dad’s closet. I mean FITTED, tight, tops that show of that bod of yours! We may be dorks, but no one said FRUMPY.

2. Make-Up: All I can say is keep it simple girls. Eyes should be colored with shades of browns and golds. One of my favorite pallets that has it all is Beautiful Eyes by Benefit. As for lips, I say keep things light and glossy with something like Glamour Daze Lipglass. But feel free to spice things up with a matte red lipstick.

1. Shoes: No Geek Chic look is complete without a pair of stylish but understated shoes. Men, feel free to wear your converse to make things a bit more hip, but I would also suggest to keep things chic with a pair of brown leather or suede loafers. And yes, we are talking about looking preppy, but dear god stay away from boat shoes. You may have a bow tie on, but we aren’t in Maine. We want want you looking slick and not like a sailor. Ladies, loafers are quickly becoming statement pieces. From leopard print to classic leather loafers, they are a great cross between sleek and geek – they look great with cafe pants in the office or for a relaxed, weekend look. Smoking shoes are also a great cousin to the loafer, which you can often see in flashy colors or studded trim.
Hot date with Mr. coffee shop guy coming up? Dress things up with a pair of mary-jane style pumps. These gold mary-janes are my favorite pair of heels this season.
